Acting President General Hamilton Mourão (PRTB) announced on Monday (21) that men from the 10th Motorized Infantry Brigade will reinforce the work on controlling oil slicks in the Northeast.
"The Army is deploying the 10th Brigade, which is the Recife-based brigade, which has about four thousand, five thousand men. It is being placed in reinforcement. Apart from equipment being distributed to the state's Civil Defenses and counties", said Mourão, according to the newspaper O Globo.
Replacing President Jair Bolsonaro (PSL), who is on an official trip to Japan, Mourão called the incident "unheard of in the world."
Since early September, oil slicks have been found on beaches in the northeast. THE latest newsletter from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) pointed out that 124 cities in the region register oil slicks.
According to the Navy, more than 525 tons of waste has already been removed from the beaches. Petrobras says it has already collected more than 280 tons of waste oil.
There is still no information about the incident that originated the environmental disaster.
