E.T. – The Extraterrestrial is probably on the list of the most memorable movies in movie history. The 1982 feature film, directed by Steven Spielberg, has several elements that have entered the popular imagination: the alien's look, the bicycle flight… Even those who have never watched the movie know what it is about.
That is why, since Thursday (28), a five-minute video has touched the nostalgic side of the internet. Not least: it's E.T.'s reunion with Elliot, 37 years after the creature returned to its home planet.
In the video, it has everything: from the alien's fingertip light to the original John Williams soundtrack. But the best easter egg in the production is the return of actor Henry Thomas – who lived Elliot in the movie – in an adult version of the character. Check out:
In the story, E.T. returns to Earth around Christmas time. He reunites with Elliot, who now lives with his children and wife. The alien then begins to learn to use new Earth technologies – after all, tablets, smartphones and VR glasses did not exist in the 1980s. Before boarding his ship, he takes his old friend's children for a spin. bike. Yes, the way you are imagining.
But calm down: The video is not a trailer or announcement of a sequel. In fact, it is an advertisement by Xfinity, a US telecommunications company that offers TV, telephone and internet services. The commercial was launched during Thanksgiving, and its slogan calls for people to reconnect on holiday holidays – hence the appearance of E.T ..
Xfinity is a subsidiary of Comcast, a US media conglomerate that owns companies such as the NBC television network and the DreamWorks Animation and Universal studios – the latter producing an ET producer. even structured a sequence, which would have a new race of aliens and expand the mythology of this universe. The idea never got off the ground.
But where has Elliot been all these years? Henry Thomas was 11 years old when he recorded E.T. in 1981. He didn't achieve the same fame as his co-star Drew Barrymore (who was 6 at the time and played Elliot's little sister). But Henry hasn't been in a coma all this time. Steady in the movies.
Not long after E.T. in 1984, he starred in Heroes Not Aged, a relative success at the time. Later, however, he did not participate in relevant productions. Hollywood unveiled a series of child stars in the 1980s – see Goonies (1985) starring Corey Feldman, Henry's friend Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings Sam) and Josh Brolin (the Avengers Thanos). The tough competition took Henry out of the spotlight, but he kept acting.
The first relevant film in which he participated after 1984 was Legends of Passion (1994), in which he played the character Samuel. In 1996, he was nominated for a supporting actor's Golden Globe for the long accusation. It was Thomas's second nomination for the award – the first was precisely as a revelation actor for E.T ..
In the following years, he played supporting roles in films such as Gangs of New York (2002). In Martin Scorsese's film, he played Johnny Sirocco. Henry's filmography also includes Dear John (2010), Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) and Doctor Sleep (2019).
In addition to the cinema, Henry also makes appearances in TV series such as CSI, Law & Order and The Mentalist. In 2018, he was one of the stars of the original Netflix series The Hill Curse, in which he played the character Hugh Crain.
In October this year, Thomas was detained by US police accused of driving under the influence of intoxicating substances – if he had called E.T. for a bike ride, none of this would have happened.
