The number of cities affected by the oil slick on the northeast coast has risen to 53 since the beginning of the month.
According to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama), 112 locations in eight states were affected by the spot. Only the state of Bahia has not yet registered the occurrence.
Ibama has been monitoring the situation since September 2, with the support of the Federal District Fire Department. According to the agency, the oil on the beaches is not of Brazilian origin, but comes from a single origin.
It is crude oil, but its origin has not yet been identified. Petrobras conducted analyzes of the material and reported that the oil found is not produced by Brazil.
Those responsible for the incident are subject to fines of up to R $ 50 million, pursuant to the Environmental Crimes Law, Law 9.605 / 1988, informed Brazil Agency.
Ibama and Petrobras will act in cleaning the beaches. The state company promised to make available a contingent of about 100 people.
The institute guides people who identify oil slicks to contact the local city hall and the institute through the Green Line at 0800618080.
